HOPSIN RETIRES FROM RAP

West Coast rapper Hopsin has enjoyed a decent career on the independent scene, and was regarded as one of a burgeoning vanguard of artists turned label owners with his Funk Volume Records. However, Hopsin has decided that the rap game is no longer his cup of tea and has announced his retirement.

Hopsin, born Marcus Jamal Hopson, has delighted his fan base via his approachable lyrics and positive stances against drug and alcohol use. This summer, he released the single “Ill Mind Of Hopsin 7,” and seemed to be headed towards greater mainstream appeal. But Wednesday (Dec. 16), night, he took to Instagram and hung up his microphone for good.

Here’s what he had to say on instagram:

“I just wanted to take time out to say I appreciate all of u who have supported my music over these past few years. A Lot of u have told me stories about how I have changed your life. You too have changed mine in ways that u can never imagine. Unfortunately, tonight is the night that I am actually moving away to Australia.

Over the past couple years I have come to conclusion that this profession just isn’t for me, so im going to venture out into new areas of life. I will always be an MC at heart, but this rap stuff just isn’t for me. I hope Youguys can respect it. I’ve signed over my half of the funk volume label to my business partner Dame. I also wished Swizzz, Dizzy Wright and Jarren Benton good luck in their careers. Thank u all! I’m out.

Sincerely,

Marcus Jamal Hopson aka “Hopsin”

Hopsin has hinted at taking a hiatus previously, but this seems to be a much more serious ordeal and the photo taken in front of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX Airport proves that it probably isn’t a joke of some sort.

Hopefully Hopsin finds a new reason to rap again while away in Australia. If not, we salute him on his new journey all the same.
